How to Be a Model

Modeling is a glamorous, but grueling, line of work. There are many different kinds of models and joining the industry requires hard work, the right characteristics and a bit of luck. When considering becoming a model, you must first decide what sort of modeling is right for you.

Plus Size Models

Curvy and full figured, the plus size model is not actually in plus sizes much of the time, but has a rounder, more luscious figure that shows these styles of clothing well.

Runway Models

To work the catwalk, you need to be at least 5’8” with a very slender frame and small breasts.

Editorial Models

To be in editorials or print, you must be at least 5’7” and extremely slender.

Swimsuit and Lingerie Models

To model lingerie or swimwear, you must have large breasts, a narrow waist and narrow hips.

Foot, Hair or Hand Model

If your body is simply not the right shape for the most common forms of modeling, you can use other glamorous assets to become a foot, hair or hand model.

Glamour Models

Glamour models show quite a bit of skin in artistic photo shoots. While not taking full nudes, the glamour model must have a stunning physique and be comfortable with this style of photography.

General Model Requirements

No matter which sort of modeling career you’re pursuing, you’ll want to present yourself in your best light at all times. Take care to be well groomed and maintain an appearance of healthy youthfulness at all times. Models should have bright, even complexions with full hair. The model must be an image of good health, but doesn’t necessarily need to be an “All-American.”

Prepare Yourself for the World of Modeling

Determine Realistic Goals – If you’re only 5’3”, unfortunately you can give up dreams of runway modeling, but instead focus on other aspects of the industry. There is ample work in the more obscure forms of modeling including hand and hair modeling, if you pursue these with determination. There are also an increasing number of petite fashions that require petite models.

Get Healthy and Fit – Start working with a dietician and physical trainer to get your body into excellent shape. Your physique will be your biggest ticket into modeling, so you must present yourself as being healthy, toned and in shape.

Prepare Photographs - Before you can interview with agencies, you must have photographs prepared. These can be snapshots, but professional photographs are best as they give you the best impression of how you truly look on film. You don’t have to have a stunning face, but you should be photogenic with a unique look – your photographs can share that. Arrange your pictures in a portfolio to be ready and have extras should you be asked to leave on with the agency on an interview.

Get Interviews - You can arrange interviews with modeling agencies as simply as calling them up and scheduling one. Agencies are always looking for new talent, but be ready to sell yourself and show yourself off to your best professional advantage. You will likely be required to put in a lot of legwork before you find the right agency that in interested in signing you. Don’t shy away from criticism – it’s your best tool for improving your odds in this cut-throat field.
