Male Modeling Tips

The Basics of Male Modeling
Male modeling is not as competitive as the female side of the industry, simply because there are fewer men interested in pursing the line of work. That doesn’t mean, of course, that just anyone can become a male model. The typical male model is between 5’11” and 6’2” and should be built athletically, although not bulky with muscles. The average male model’s weight falls between 140 and 165. Body fat should be low and your overall appearance should be of health and fitness.

Unlike female modeling which requires different body types for different forms of modeling, with few exceptions, male models must fit the same mold of a muscular, athletic demeanor, regardless of height or age, although ramp or catwalk models will likely need to be over six feet tall. Male models also start their careers a bit later than females, often entering the industry between 18 and 25 and are able to enjoy a longer career as well.
Succeeding as a Male Model
To make it as a male model, you’ll need to stay flexible and continue to work hard to earn those paychecks.
- Get in Shape – That tight midsection is your best bet for landing an agency contract, but you’ll also want to work on your look. Male models have stage presence and a unique, usually sexy, look.
- Get Photographs – Take your own snapshots to show your face and body from different angles. Bring these along when you visit modeling agencies.
- Get Represented – While there are opportunities for freelancing models, the majority of models work under the representation of a modeling agency. Make the rounds looking for an agency and be ready to experience rejection. Even the best models are rejected up to 70% of the time. New models have a much higher rejection rate.
- Get Jobs – Once you’ve found an agency you’re interested in, do your homework to be sure that the agency is a good one. The top male model agency is Boss in New York, but there are many other solid agencies that represent male models. Be open to various opportunities, but always be cautious of exploiting yourself or being forced into compromising situations. Always remember that your agency should be working for you – they should be getting paid when you do.
