Plus Size Models

An often overlooked segment of modeling that is in increasing demand is the plus size model. The plus size model is larger than the iconic runway models and has a more curvaceous figure. While not necessarily wearing plus size clothing sold in stores, the plus size model does wear larger sizes and must meet other physical criteria.

The Basics of Plus Size Modeling

Plus size models have opportunities in runway, print fashion and catalog modeling although there might be fewer opportunities overall. Just as it is hard to meet the physical demands of being a thin runway model, the plus size model must meet certain criteria as well. The plus size model is usually 5’8” to 6” tall and wears a size ten or larger. For many women in the plus size modeling industry, they are not overweight, but have a healthy, even athletic figure that fits evenly into the larger sizes.

The plus size model must also have an hourglass figure with roughly the same measurements on the top and bottom as well as shapely legs. The overall impression of a robust, healthy young woman is the standard for plus size modeling, and this industry can be just as challenging to enter as traditional modeling.

Perfect Your Physique

The plus size model must be healthy and fit, perhaps even toned and tight. This will require a careful diet and plenty of time in the gym gaining the poise and appearance of fitness. In addition to your body, the plus size model should also pay attention to her overall grooming. Clear, fresh skin is essential as are straight white teeth. A full head of coifed hair is required as well. Plus size models should experiment to find their best natural look with the full understanding that an agency can, and often does, ask them to change the look once a contract has been signed.

Locate a Quality Agency

A modeling agency is your next step to finding work as a plus size model. You can find an agency in different ways, but at all meetings you should be prepared with high-quality snapshots of your face and body. Appear in closely fitting attire and a loose natural look. Consider this your “blank canvas” you’re presenting to the agent.

Make Appointments – Many agencies accept appointments throughout the year, so always call up the top agencies and even the second tier agencies in your area to schedule appointments. Listen to any criticism that might come from the meetings, especially rejections, and do what you can to remedy the situation for future meetings with agents.

Attend Open Calls – The larger agencies open their doors every so often for the masses of hopefuls. Attend these events to get a look at the competition and to get your minute or two with the top agents. You never know if it will be your good looks and stunning charm that will catch the agent’s eye that day.

Compete in Fashion Contests – When the top agencies tour the country, they do often use modeling or fashion contests to spot young hopeful. Enter these programs if the registration fee isn’t too high and there is a reputable agency sponsoring the program.
